Why cover letters don’t work!
They are NOT read
- HR and Recruiters don’t have time (few exceptions, but very few)
- My research found 80% didn’t read cover letters
Too Generic
- Do you start your letter “Please find enclosed” – see my point
- Most cover letters are a rehash of the CV in paragraphs
No personality or connection
- Most cover letters are impersonal, little personality or connection
- I joke by calling them a solicitor’s letter
- You MUST try to make a connection – be authentic!!
To wordy
- It’s slow death by long wishy-washy content
- It won’t be read if it looks like hard work for the reader
- I like to use bullet points. Yes, bullet points in a letter!!
I don’t write cover letters for clients, I give out a simple template
